The Airdrie Parades committee says this year’s Canada Day Parade will be shorter, is expected to have about 40 per cent fewer entries and will have no horse entries as organizers adapt to a new route required because of Main Street construction.
In an interview Friday, Teri Zucht of the Airdrie Parades committee said the new route is about half the size of the previous route, affecting both the parade distance and available viewing space.

“It’s a bit of both, unfortunately, and so we recognize this is going to be a really hard change this year for the people of Airdrie,” Zucht said.
The committee hopes the change is short term, but Zucht said it cannot guarantee the previous route will return in future years.
The City of Airdrie announced Thursday that the 2026 Canada Day Parade route has been changed due to continued work on the Main Street Rehabilitation Project.
According to the city, the updated route was designed to avoid active construction zones while maintaining viewing opportunities for residents.
The parade is scheduled for July 1 from 10 a.m. to noon in downtown Airdrie.
It will begin at École Edwards Elementary School before travelling south on Jensen Drive and Main Street.
The route will then continue east along Centre Avenue and finish at Allen Street and 1st Avenue.
Shorter route, fewer entries expected
Zucht said the committee went back and forth with the city on several route proposals before landing on the smaller route.
“We have gone back and forth with the city a number of times with multiple proposals for routes, and unfortunately, the smaller route was what we needed to land on for lots of reasons,” she said.
“It’s the one that made the most sense. So we are going to have obviously reduced seating area because it is about half the size. We’re going to have about 40 per cent less entries than what we’ve seen in past years.”
